Artificial Intelligence

Kia ora koutou!
https://www.kidscodecs.com/what-is-artificial-intelligence/

This week we are going to dive into the world of AI (artificial intelligence). This Thursday Room 10 will be Skyping an AI scientist Anirudh from University of Montreal  so this is your chance to get your burning questions answered!

Artificial Intelligence has been a hot topic lately. From self driving cars to using Siri or Alexa on phones/tablets and iPads.

You might have had an experience by using it and it not even known about it. Have you ever been on Netflix or Lightbox? Every time that app suggests a movie you might like that is an example of Artificial intelligence at work.

So what do you think AI is? We will take your questions to our scientist and report you back the answers! If you can’t make the chat but still have a question feel free to post it on this padlet with your name and school. https://padlet.com/kateb5/duriv1b990bp

  1. What do you think AI is?
  2. What is an example of Artificial Intelligence you can think of?
  3. Would you take a ride in a self driving car? Why/why not?
  4. Do you have a question we can ask Anirudh from University of Montreal a computer science and AI scientist?
  5. What would you do with your very own self driving car?
  6. How do you think AI might be helpful to us in the future?
  7. If you could create a robot that could do any job for you what would it be?
  8. How would your robot work?
Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday at 2pm.

Native New Zealand Animals

This week we are looking at Persuasive Writing and sharing an opinion
Image from http://www.photosforclass.com/search?text=Maui+Dolphin
The Māui dolphin
One of the world's smallest and rarest dolphins. An endemic sub-species closely related to the Hector's dolphin, it is now found only in the shallow coastal waters off the west coast of the North Island. In 2012, it was estimated that between 48 and 69 mature animals remained.

Opinion, Facts and Thoughts

  1. What are some native animals to New Zealand that are in threat of extinction?
  2. How do we protect and look after our native animals in NZ?
  3. Where are you most likely to see New Zealand’s native animals?
  4. Many people believe that to save animals from extinction they should be bred in zoos? Do you agree/disagree with this statement and give one reason why.
  5. When zoo bred animals are released back into the wild there can be serious problems. What might some of these problems be?
  6. Zoos are …...a life sentence for animals. What do you think this means?
  7. Why do you think animals in the wild die before they reach maturity?
  8. ...the only way to save our endangered animals is to study and protect their habitat. Why?
  9. Should we have zoos or wildlife parks? Why?
  10. If you could chose one animal to study what would it be and why?

See you all on Wednesday at 2pm.

Hacking your Learning: What would make you happy?

What if you could design your learning environment - both the physical space, and what you were learning, what would it look like? Imagine it! How would you design your space? What would you create?

What would make you happy?

This is Logan LaPlante. He is 13. His talk has had nearly 5 million views! He's a Hacker.

"Hackers are innovators. Hackers are people who challenge and change the systems to make them work differently, to make them work better. It's just how they think. It's a mindset."

Senior Primary/Intermediate classes might to watch his talk to help them think about the answers they contribute for the questions this week.

Junior and Middle Primary may like to watch Josh's Video about his perfect classroom.

What if learning looked like this?

Questions:

Q1. What would be your ultimate learning environment? Describe it.

Q2. What tools would be used in your environment for your learning?

Q3. What would you like to learn about?

Q4. How would you like to learn this?

Q5. Why would this learning be important to you?

Q6. How would your Dream Teacher help you?
