At 2.30 am on 25th April, 1915 the ANZACs arrived at Gallipoli in ships. 2015 marks 100 years since that date - a date of great significance to both NZ and Australia. 

This week our Kidsedchatnz chat is all about ANZAC Day. 

Flipped Challenge 1  

Your mission is to build the ANZAC landing: Gallipoli Peninsula

You could use Minecraft for this, build it out of lego or any other materials you would like to use.

Flipped Challenge 2 

There are lots of amazing ANZAC stories out there. Your challenge is to create a book review of your favourite ANZAC story. Get creative and think outside the square. You can do this any way you like! Inspire other children to read your favourite ANZAC story. 

Here are the questions for this week:

Q1. What have you learnt about ANZAC Day in your class? If you have recreated the ANZAC landing you can share this now! 
Q2. What does ANZAC day mean to you personally?
Q3. Do you have any extended family that fought in Gallipoli? What stories can you tell us?
Q4. How does your school and/or family celebrate ANZAC Day?
Q5. Do you think ANZAC day is important? Should we celebrate the day? How else could ANZAC Day be celebrated?
Q6. There are lots of great ANZAC books and stories out there. Which is your favourite and why? Share your book reviews! :)
Q7. Why are poppies sold before and on Anzac Day? Why was the poppy chosen and what does it represent?

Q8. How did the Anzac biscuit originate? Do you have a favourite Anzac biscuit recipe that you would like to share?
Q9. Have you ever been to an ANZAC Day celebration? What happened and how did it make you feel?

Week 7 Food and nutrition

This week our questions are all about food and nutrition. There are some activities you may need to do before Wednesday. Have fun!

  1. Why do you think it is important to eat healthily?
  2. Take a photo of your lunch box if you can and share it with us. How many healthy items do you have? How many pieces of waste do you have? eg glad wrap
  3. Does your school have a garden? What grows in it? Do you get to eat any of the food grown? What do you do with the extra produce?
  4. Do you grow food at home? What do you grow? What would you like to grow?
  5. Have a look at three nutrition labels on food in your kitchen. What information can you learn from these labels? This link may help you. How to read food labels.

  1. Find a recipe (from home or google) that uses your favourite fruit or vege.
  2. Create a menu that you could serve your family for tea that is healthy. If you cook this meal this week, share some photos of your family enjoying it. (Remember to ask permission to share photos of your family!)
  3. Name the main food groups and examples from each group. This link may help you! Nutrition Foundation
  4. Look at this picture. Discuss with a buddy an alternative to another unhealthy choice.

Tweet of the week - Inventive Thinking

Awesome week everybody!

There were well over 1400 tweets again this week and it seemed like there plenty of classes from last year, as well as a few new ones.

It was great to see that the quality of tweets continues to improve as everyone keeps learning how to write better responses and people begin to form conversations between tweeters. Conversation is what this is all about.

I loved a lot of the tweets this week but things were moving so fast that I haven't replied or favourited all of them. Lots of inventions were discussed and I loved the thought that a toothbrush, torch and clothes were important but this one should definitely be created:

Inventive Thinking, Creativity, Passion & Talent

This week's topic is about your creativity, passion, talent and inventive thinking.

Part of the chat is flipped so make sure you watch the Kid President's
YouTube clip on how to be an inventor. You may also like to physically create or just draw a picture of something you would invent to make the world more awesome. There will be an opportunity for you to share your inventions during the chat. 

    Teachers, you may also like to watch the 'Creativity Takes Time' YouTube clip yourself and do this mini lesson with your class. 

  1. What are your interests, talents or passions?
  2. How do you get to learn about your interests in the classroom? Give us an example. 
  3. Do you think it's important for children to have time each week to learn about something that they're interested in? Why?
  4. What is the world's most important invention so far? How does it affect your life?
  5. The Kid President wanted to invent a Catuum Cleaner. What would you like to invent to make the world more awesome? *Opportunity to share a photo via a tweet here. 
  6. The top 10 jobs in 2013 didn't exist in 2004. What jobs do you think there will be in 10 years time?
  7. Inventive thinking requires taking risks, being curious and thinking skills. How do you do this in the classroom?
  8. Is creativity important? How can we encourage creativity in the classroom?
  9. Sometimes we get stuck with our learning and have to problem solve. What does good problem solving look like?
